Toyota Shows Its Green Side in Montreal

Published on June 20 2016

For the largest global electric vehicle conference taking place in Montreal, Toyota has brought a few special treats for the Canadian audience. That includes a Californian exclusivity and a three-wheel personal mobility vehicle.

The all-new 2016 Mirai

The Toyota Mirai is quite striking. The hydrogen fuel-cell sedan is not one we are likely to see here in Canada. In fact, the model is currently an exclusivity of the Californian market. It is thanks to the ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) Program established in California that manufacturers have to offer at least one clean energy vehicle in their lineup. This is when the Mirai came into play. Its market will broaden, but Canada isn’t currently on the list. A select few got to put their hands on one during the 2016 edition of the AJAC’s EcoRun and now the Montreal audience will discover the technology as well as Toyota has put one on exhibition at the EVS29 conference. In doing so, Toyota is hoping to trigger discussions about the hydrogen technology in Quebec. The water-waste producing vehicle has a 480 km range, which makes it a lot more flexible than an electric vehicle, with a ‘fuel’ economy of 3.9L/100km, the best rating currently on the market for a fuel cell vehicle. And despite being powered by a component of water, the Mirai is rated at a respectable 151 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque!

The Mirai was only a hors d’oeuvre to the real star of the show: the new 2017 Prius Prime Plug-in. Looking at the Mirai, we can see where Toyota drew inspiration for the redesign of the hybrid. This new generation of the Prius Plug-In receives a stand-out design of its own, creating a very clear, visual separation from the standard model Prius. Equipped with a new 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the new Prius Prime will offer a 35-km all-electric range and a total 965 km on a single tank of gas, thanks to an expected fuel economy of 1.96L/100km. This marks a 22 percent improvement over the fuel economy of the previous generation Prius plug-in.

The all-new Toyota i- Road

Also on display at the EVS29 was the Toyota i-Road, a colorful, fun little electric vehicle that takes mobile personality to a whole new level. Neither a car or a motorcycle, the i-Road is a hybrid of the two with a close cockpit, three wheels and seating for up to two people. This little vehicle is the perfect urban commuter with a 50 km range and a top speed of 60 km/h, ideal for the city dwellers who have short daily distances to travel to go about their day.

Curious about the Toyota electric and hybrid lineup? Come and meet our team at Mendes Toyota Scion to learn more about the all-new 2017 Prius Prime Plug-in and about the fun little i-Road or learn about the fuel-cell technology of the 2016 Mirai!
