Toyota at the 2016 Canadian International Auto Show

Published on February 16 2016

For the second and most important Canadian auto show of 2016, Toyota had brought a few novelties to their booth to introduce to the Toronto audience. For 2016, the manufacturer put their new Prius and RAV4 hybrid under the spotlight. However, the stage was taken by Toyota’s latest concept, the U2 Urban Utility concept.

Ready to Take on the Competition

When Toyota goes up against the Sprinter or the Transit, you get the U2 concept. U2 or U-Squared stands for Urban Utility. Combining utility and urban mobility, the U2 is inspired by the utility van and the passenger car. It is meant to appeal to both the mobile entrepreneur and the urban dweller with an active life that requires some utility to carry his or her gear around. The U2 concept has an easy, accessible trunk with a tailgate that lowers to the ground turning into a ramp to make it easy to charge, say, a bicycle. The roof panels retract and side windows flip up for easy access from the side of the vehicle. The rear seats are foldable and passenger front seat can be folded and/or removed altogether.

Toyota Presented more than just Concepts

Also on exhibit at the CIAS Toyota booth is the new 2016 Prius. Toyota’s popular hybrid model entered into its fourth generation with a bang and a brand new design. It will be the first model built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture and will feature lighter components. The model will be available with a lithium-ion hybrid battery in addition to the existing nickel-metal hybride, allowing for more cargo space, allowing for the battery pack to be relocated from the cargo area to under the rear seats.

The 1.8L, four-cylinder engine is combined to two power generators for an average fuel economy of 4.5L/100km, making the Prius the most fuel efficient vehicles in Canada. The new 2016 Prius will be available in three different models and five trims, starting at $25,995, and will go on sale this winter.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is also on display at the Toyota booth. The SUV is a combination of one of the market’s most advanced hybrid technologies and Toyota’s second best selling model. The RAV4 Hybrid benefits from the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive and is equipped with a 2.5L, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle combustion engine teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. It is also available in both a front-wheel and all-wheel drive layout. Pricing on the new 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will start at $34,715.
