The Toyota Corolla Will Celebrate its 50th Anniversary in Style

Published on May 16 2016

The Toyota Corolla has undergone a massive change in personality since the introduction of its eleventh generation three years ago. Thanks to a bolder design, one of the most popular compact sedans on the market has not only become a symbol of reliability but also a real head-turner on the road. For 2017, both model and maker have a milestone to celebrate and they plan on doing so with an updated design and new standard safety features.

50 Years of Excellence

In 2017, Toyota will celebrate the Corolla’s 50th anniversary on the North American market, having sold over 43 million Corollas worldwide in half a century. It is one of the longest running and most successful models still on the market. Unveiled at this year’s New York auto show, the milestone will be set with a special edition Corolla, the XSE. The front-portion design of the sedan received some tweaks with a slightly elongated nose with a hood line in the shape of a downwards V, a honeycomb front grille, 17-inch wheels and complex LED fogs. It will now be offered in two new paint colors as well.

On the inside,  the restyled Corolla receives a 6.1-inch high-resolution display surrounded with piano black inserts and tactile controls, five-spoke air vents and the 50th Anniversary edition model will also get trim specific black cherry accents. It will also feature equipment such as heated seats, wheel-mounted commands, cruise control, keyless entry with push start button, moonroof, backup camera, infotainment system with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity and streaming capacity.

Safety Features for the 21st Century

It will also offer the full Toyota Safety Sense technology package that includes safety features such as pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist and automatic high beams. All trim levels of the Corolla also include the Star Safety System that also adds features including traction and stability control, brake assist and smart stop technology.

The Corolla is powered by a 1.8L, four-cylinder engine. As for the Corolla LE ECO, it is offered with the same displacement equipped with a low-emission technology. The standard engine is rated at 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque and the low-emission version, at 140 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. The entry-level engine is teamed with your choice of a 6-speed manual or  4-speed automatic transmission, the ECO receives a CVT for a combined average fuel economy of 6.8L/100km.
