2016 Toyota RAV4: Upgrades and Improvements

Published on December 23 2015

2016 is a model-year introduced under the sign of upgrades. In fact, after a thorough revision and the introduction of a fourth generation for 2013, the Toyota RAV4 received for this year a few minor design upgrades as well as an all-new powertrain option, a welcome mid-cycle refresh to keep the compact SUV in the running in the heated compact SUV segment.

All New and Much Better

Forget the third row of the seats and the V6 from yesteryears; the RAV4 has established itself in well within the realm of compact utility vehicles, a highly popular and aggressive segment to compete in. To keep its share of the cake, Toyota has given its small SUV a little facelift to match the new signature look introduced on the Corolla. Though the silhouette shares similarities with its competitors with the high slope of the roof that ends on a straight-down hatch door, the modernized front portion manages to stand out from the crowd with its angular headlamps, three black front grille bands structuring the bumper and the deep ridges on the hood converging from the window mounts towards the center of the nose.

The biggest novelty of all is without a doubt the addition of a hybrid powertrain to the lineup, making the RAV4 the only vehicle in the segment with an electric engine. The standard powertrain on the Japanese SUV is a 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission and optional AWD, rated at 176 hp. Add the Hybrid Synergy Drive with a CVT to the mix and you get the hybrid variant that will get you a combined fuel economy average of 7.2L/100km.

The Interior Brings more Comfort

In the cockpit, the RAV4 combines convenience and space to host up to five passenger. In the redesign process of 2013, it lost its third row of seats in order to offer more overall interior space, and yes, more comfort. Behind the second row of seats, it offers 1,090L of cargo volume. It also provides plenty of convenience with features such as wheel-mounted controls, backup camera and bird’s-eye-view camera, dual zone climate control, smart key and push button start, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity with wireless streaming, navigation, cruise control, power moonroof, etc.

The RAV4 also packs quite a few active safety features, including the rear-cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and blind spot monitor as well as the Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense that add technologies such as pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with lane keep assist, dynamic radar cruise control and smart stop.

Our team at Mendes Toyota will be glad to give you the run down of all the features and advantages of owning a Toyota. Discover the refreshed 2016 Toyota RAV4 and give its new hybrid powertrain a drive.
